Boston’s style isn’t like New York’s. It certainly isn’t anything like L.A’s or London’s. We don’t have scantily clad models walking down runways flanked by the fashion paparazzi.
What we do have, however, is an impressive sartorial history anchored in a tradition of classic style.
While other cities take their inspiration from models and celebrities, we choose to take ours from prep schools and colleges. From presidents (we see you, JFK). From our fathers and grandfathers. We choose OCBDs, khakis and penny loafers rather than t-shirts, joggers and high-tops.
One of the stores at the heart of continuing this movement in Boston (and on the South Shore, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard for that matter), is North River Outfitter. Their flagship store, pictured above and below, is an instruction manual in how to pull of New England Style well. On the racks and shelves are all the names we seek out: Barbour, Sperry, Vilebrequin, Bill’s Khakis – you name it, it’s there.
With that being said, NRO isn’t afraid to also look ahead. They realize that while that pair of Alden’s will always be a cornerstone of your wardrobe, there are also dozens of new brands coming up through the ranks that deserve our consideration. With brands like Johnnie-O, Peter Millar and Swims, NRO is looking to build the new generation of preps – a generation that has both one eye to our classical heritage and one eye at our bright sartorial future.
If you go to one of NRO’s stores, here are my top items to check out:
Daniel Wellington Classic Bristol Watch: These watches are insanely popular right now – and for good reason. The close to $200 price point is feasible and minimal design is both right on trend but distinctly classic. If you’re looking for your seven-day-a-week watch, this is it.
Barbour Leather Medium Travel Explorer: Bad news: you can’t use your sports bag as both a gym bag and a weekender when you shoot down to the cape. After all, what’s a New England summer without a few weekend trips?
Krewe du Optic – Matte Rue: Speaking of popular, you know how everyone has that same pair of Ray Bans? It’s time to break the mold. Up-and-comer Krewe makes shades that are flying off the shelves at NRO that have a similarly classic style, but with a little more punch.
- Alden Calf-Skin Tassel Loafers: Ok, these bad boys are pricey but they are about as high on my wish-list as you can get. If you can afford ‘em, you won’t regret it.
Here in New England, we aren’t like the rest of the world and we should be proud. Having our sartorial history influenced by sun-drenched weekends on Nantucket and the brick walls of Harvard is just fine with me.
