If the Polar Vortex showed us anything, it’s that we still have a pretty long winter ahead of us. So, how do you manage to stay stylish without looking like a fashion victim from the 90s (e.g., long sleeves under short sleeves)?
First, why layer? Layering is functional; it shields from the weather and it warms when the mercury drops. But, it’s also stylish as well. When you combine complementary hues, patterns and textures, it elevates your look and it gives your outfit a little personality.
Here are some tips and tricks to looking good while staying warm this winter.
- Keep your layers slim and close-fitting (but loose enough to allow for the under layers to move and breathe). When you feel bulky, you probably look bulky too. From your undershirt to overcoat on top, each garment should be slim.
- Play with textures and patterns (but do it from smallest to largest, lightest to darkest). If you wear a blazer with a beautiful, large windowpane pattern on it, try a more subdued, micro-check for your dress shirt. The same logic applies for ties and shirts by the way! That way you don’t end up like a stereogram.
- Color is key (but balance your outfit out with neutrals and one bold color). If you’re sticking with grays, try multi-tonal grays (lighter and darker) for each layer. If you introduce any bold color, a necktie, scarf or sweater is the way to go. Bold colors should be restrained to one or two pieces.
- Don’t forget your extremities (and accessories) Hats and gloves are essential for obvious reasons. But, don’t forget about the scarf. Men can and should wear scarves. Here are a few ways to wear one. A fine cashmere or wool is elegant and refined. Linen, silk or silk-blends add a touch of personal flair to any outfit.
