You might not know who he is, but in the Hip Hop scene, Theophilus London is a name to be reckoned with. To provide some context for his popularity, Kayne just produced his latest album and broke his own self-enforced “I don’t do features” rule on “Can’t Stop,” the lead single from London’s latest album, Vibes. This album was released at the end of October and follows up on a few critically acclaimed efforts including Lovers Holiday and Timez Are Weird These Days.
However, despite his own rap talent, like more and more hip hop artists (e.g. Kayne West) Theophilus London has begun to produce much of his own music - yet another outlet for his boundless creativity. Theophilus doesn’t leave his self-expression there though, he has taken his cooler-than-cool flow and flipped it into a killer personal style and a series of collaborations with top fashion-industry names. Some of the top brands include Gucci, Stussy, SpongeBob SquarePants (no, really), and Del Toro. His look is embodied by wide-brim hats, designer sunglasses, pop-color suits and carefully chosen leather jackets you probably couldn’t pull off.
And while London has taken it upon himself to up his sartorial game, it’ll never be the true focus of his passion. A not-so-recent Newsweek article quoted him as saying that he “doesn’t know too much about fashion.” As for creating his own line, in that same interview he said “having a line, and getting into fashion, is too complicated. I need to make five records first. It leaves a good legacy to have five records.”
Judging by the quality of his new venture, Vibes, we’re totally cool with that. As long as he keeps killing the style game, too.
